Who are Toilet Twinning?
Toilet Twinning is a charity initiative that aims to fund and provide water and sanitation facilities to those in less developed areas.
In 47 countries across the world less than half the population has a proper toilet. In this day and age this should not be the case and Toilet Twinning wants to eradicate this type of poverty.
What are their aims?
Already Toilet Twinning has transformed over 640,000 lives through their work. Their aim is twofold:
- To provide water and sanitation programmes for families in less developed communities.
- Educate people living in these places.
Where possible their team goes into less developed areas to improve knowledge surrounding sanitation and hygiene. This encourages local populations to want a toilet and to actually build that toilet themselves. Toilet Twinning firmly believes that one of the key steps in ending poverty is through education.
Toilet Twinning wants to provide sanitation and toilet facilities to give families access to clean water, meaning they don’t need to collect it miles away from home. They also want to give girls and women a safe, private place to go to the toilet as many attacks on these women are when they are exposed to others whilst going to the toilet. In addition, the number of children dying daily from sickness related to poor toilet facilities and unclean water is unnecessarily high. Toilet Twinning wants to reduce these risks by providing education and proper sanitation solutions.
Where do they work?
These life-changing projects take place in a number of countries including Malawi, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Toilet Twinning builds relationships with the villagers and provides them with knowledge regarding hygiene and proper sanitation. This then stimulates the desire for change amongst the villagers for better hygiene systems and behaviour.
Why do they do what they do?
Adults and children should not have to drink unsafe water, nor should they be dying from hygiene-related illnesses. They are stuck in a chain of circumstances and without proper education they don’t know things could be different. Toilet Twinning wants to change this and reduce these numbers greatly to give families in poor communities access to a basic toilet and clean water.
Wilson Washrooms donate to Toilet Twinning
Wilson Washrooms are proud to be involved with Toilet Twinning and make a monthly donation that helps those further afield gain access to basic toilets and clean water, basics that we often take for granted, therefore improving hygiene on a global scale.
